The Model United Nations Assembly committee would like to take this opportunity to remind Rotary Club members, students, teachers, families and friends that we will be holding the next Model United Nations Assembly at the Nan Tien Temple on Saturday 12th May 2012.

MUNA is in its seventeenth year and aims to foster an understanding of the workings of the United Nations Assembly amongst young people.

For Rotary Club members please contact your local High School’s Year 11 coordinator (for 2012) now. They will determine if they have a debating team that would like to take part.

For Schools if you would like to participate this year you will need the assistance of your local Rotary Club. Your club should contact you in the very near future. If you do not hear from them by the end of February please feel free to contact them. National MUNA 19th - 21st August 2011

NationalMUNA 2011

District9750 was very well represented by two local teams at the recent National MUNAhosted by the Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise. Sydney Technical High School – Chris Janssen,Ben Reynolds and Jonathan Gaymer represented Brazil while Caringbah HighSchool’s Paige Burton, Kaitlin Lake and Timothy Leavold represented Russia.

Thecompetition was held over the weekend of the 19^th-21^stAugust in the House of Representatives Chamber of Old Parliament House inCanberra.

Teamswere required to research 13 topics of which six resolutions were debated overthe weekend. These included topics suchas human rights and extreme poverty, protection of global climate for presentand future generations, the right of the Palestinian people to self-determinationand an international strategy for disaster reduction.

Paige Burton, Kaitlin Lake and Timothy Leavold of Caringbah High took first place

Thestandard of debating from all students was very high and we are extremely proudto be able to congratulate Caringbah High School for taking out 1^stplace.

Theweekend was not only about debating. Thestudents all participated in a tour of the ANU Campus on the Friday afternoon anda formal dinner held at Bruce Hall on Saturday night.

Friendshipswere formed and a lot of fun was had by all. Congratulations should be extended to all students whoparticipated.

Rotary International District 9750 Model United Nations Assembly Sat 14 May 2011

Congratulations to all those delegates who took part in yesterday's Model United Nations Assembly at the Nan Tien Temple in Berkeley NSW.

There were twenty one teams at the Nan Tien Temple who debated various topics including the growing number of refugees around the world their human rights and the attitude of recipient nations towards them, the recommendation that the veto power of the Permanent Members of the Security Council be abolished, the exposure to contamination from nuclear power plants is so great that they should be decommissioned, and whether or not the UN could interfere in the internal affairs of member states.

Unfortunately the delegates representing France were unable to attend.

In third place was the team from Kiama High School who represented Italy.

In second place was the team from the USA represented by Caringbah High School.

The winners of the Brian and Val Heaton Shield for 2011 was the team from Sydney Technical High School who represented India.

The John Hall Memorial Trophy for the best speech of the day was presented to James M from Kiama High School.

The Best Dressed award went to the team from St Patrick’s College who represented Indonesia.
